Walking around Nottingham with no other reason than searching for people to add to my stranger project I found myself travelling in the same direction, and very close to Ivana. Her hair colour caught my eye so I immediately introduced the project to her.
As it happened we’d stopped by a very dark green painted shop that had a few pillars of the same tone fronting the building. A perfect colour to set Ivana’s hair against I thought. As the sun was shielded from view by cloud cover, the light was soft and flattering so very easy to work with.
Ivana is from Slovakia and it was there that she had studied the English language. After successfully completing her university course she thought she needed to put into practice what she had learnt so moved to England and she has now lived in the UK for the past three years and has no desire to head back to Slovakia any time soon.
I asked Ivana if there was anything she liked about England better than her home country and she said the people, then went on to explain that she finds the English friendlier and more open minded. She also said that everyday feels like a weekend, as in Slovakia no-one goes out much other than at the weekend whereas here people go out every day to have fun.
When I asked what she likes to do in her spare time, Ivana told me she has an obsession with keeping a diary, something she has done every day since she was six. Ivana also told me she enjoys art and enjoys painting and drawing charactertures.
Thank-you Ivana for giving me some of your time to photograph you for my stranger project and I hope you like your portrait.
