Miniature Painting III, Princess, around 1850

Nice Miniature Painting of a Princess or wife of an emperor, probably France, because of the white powdered hair which was totally in fashion in France, not England. She is wearing a white Hermelin fur, so she wants to show the viewer her high aristocratic stand. Her dress is dark red with golden ornaments and a golden belt around her waist. she is wearing a pink ribbon in her hair together with a pearl lace. Her face is fine and nice, only the quite strange painting of her underlip shows that the painter was not really first class, probably this is a later copy of an original, made by a house painter, nevertheless her dress and hair are very nicely painted. Usually you can easily disguise bad painters when looking at the hands, but this detail has been avoided completely here. Miniature Artists charged additional prices for painting hands, because it was quite hard to do on such small formats. This portrait is painted on ivory, unfortunately the ivory has a crack right in her head. In all a nice and very decorative painting, found for 50 Euros at a flea market.
