No to 'lady lagers': There's a proper beer for every girl
Sexist marketing has put women off drinking beer, says Sophie Atherton, the UK's first female qualified beer sommelier.
Atherton is a woman on a mission, to get people - especially female drinkers, who make up only 10 percent of the UK market - enthused about beer. Not "fizzy, cold yellow crap" as she sees it, from the big-name brewers that many pubs serve, but craft beers and cask ales, those brewed by independent breweries, usually on a small scale with a focus on the taste (like the lemon cheesecake number, Trinity, a light ale by the Redemption Brewery based in north London).
A well made beer, is the equivalent of eating a really beautiful meal, made with local, high quality ingredients,” she says. "Brewers should be our new celebrity chefs - they take care over their recipes and really think about flavours."
Atherton is well placed to comment. Three months ago she became the UK's first accredited female beer sommelier. Since then, in between her work as a journalist and beer writer, she's been working tirelessly as a "beer ambassador", doing talks and tastings like this one during National Cask Ale Week at the The North Pole pub in Islington, north London, to try and spread the love.
