My Dad went to a garage sale around the corner and down the road the other day. He bought a saw off the guy, couldn't transport it in his truck, so later my Mom went back to check with the folks and see how they were going to move it.
As she earlier suspected, the gentleman living there turned out to be her Uncle's really good friend, Kenny. They used to hang out all the time, back when they went to rodeos and competed. My Ma remembers her and her cousin sitting on the sidelines in the bleachers and watching them, and thought it was one of the coolest things they'd ever experienced. A rush, for sure.
Turns out, Kenny and his wife have been living around the corner from us in the same house for 48 years.
Small world, huh?!?
My Ma talked to them for quite some time, shopped at their garage sale, and enjoyed reminiscing about the good ol' days when she used to have a horse of her own and showed him and went to fair in 4H (before it got bad).

The next day, as she had promised them, my Mom was back, but this time she brought me with her. I greeted Kenny's wife and daughter (I can't recall their names now--aahh!), who were just the kindest people you'd ever meet, and then immediately started pulling things off the tables by the arm-fulls. I snatched two southwestern-tribal-style horse blankets (obsessed) and a long-sleeved ranch-style horse shirt and a fringe skirt and some other horse-and-western-themed knick-knacks. And of course, my Mom had quite the haul as well. We piled it all on the table, she gave us an awesome deal, and then we piled everything into the backseat of our car.
Then, Kenny asked if we wanted to meet his Mules.
It was a question I had hoped he would ask, seeing as my Mom had told me about them the day before, but she hadn't seen them yet either. He took us out back and there they were, a beautiful Mule mare named Sweet Thing, and a Mule colt named Samuel.
I. Fell. In. Love. Sam gave me endless nuzzles and kisses (as you can see) and Kenny hinted at him being for sale and I just can't handle it... I WANT HIIIIM!!!
I returned home to my baby girl standing at the gate who whinnied when I got out of the car, and I felt totally guilty for spending time with someone else's horses, haha. And wanting to buy one of them! I know -- I'm crazy, right?! Montana would bite me in the butt, huh? :\ But what if the Mule was considered my Mom's...?!? ;] Ah. Still trying to convince her...
It was a really wonderful way to spend part of Mother's Day weekend.
And I kinda think I need a Mule at some point in my life. I'd name him Mule. Just, Mule. Inspired by one of my all-time favorite books, Swan Song.
But NO horse is EVER going to replace my beautiful Tana.
That's a promise.
