Meet Christina S.
I was actually lucky to meet Christina S (the second consecutive Christina I met) since I had pretty much got into my car after a successful stranger outing photographing Fiona and Christina.
But I had to make a trip back to Barnes & Noble to pick a book I had intended to earlier and had forgotten to. By habit I carried my camera bag though I really had zero chance of using it given it was past sunset and I really didn't have any confidence seeking strangers without natural light
However as I was searching the shelves, I noticed Christina, a elegant beautiful young lady in the adjoining aisle engrossed in browsing through some books - the "stranger" trigger immediately went off but I deliberated and hesitated endlessly given my lack of confidence with using any artificial light. By then Christina (accompanied by another lady - which I later discovered to be her mom Monica) had completed her purchase and left. Given my past experiences of running into strangers a second time - I mentally decided that If I was lucky to meet Christina again I would at least make a request (so at the very least I would not regret that part later). And in that sense luck was on my side - our paths crossed again a few minutes on the street and Christina settled in a seating area outside Barnes (having some quality time with her mom it appeared). This time, despite not having worked out any kind of plan, I approached them and explained the project and requested participation. As elated as I was when Christina accepted was also hit by a wave of nervousness. I really didn't have the experience of dealing with flash shoot but didn't want to lose the opportunity - I candidly explained the same to Christina and Monica (mom) offering to delete the pictures if they turned out bad. I am thankful to them for being gracious and generous despite this admission, Given that they were not in great rush they agreed to cross the street to the same location where I had earlier photographed the other Christina but this time in completely different light conditions.
As we walked across we had a nice chat ranging accross various topics - from a little more about ourselves to the current politics. It was wonderful to chat with complete strangers and I am indeed grateful to Christina and Monica for treating me with such familiarity. Christina, an aspiring actress, is back after completing 4 years of acting school in Vancouver and is now excited to begin her career - still debating where she wanted to settle down to pursue her next steps. She has a wonderful ability to connect with people, learning more about them and their culture (and this quite apparent during our conversation). She has spent few years in Madrid too for her education and had acquainted with people and cultures from across the globe. She loves it whenever she can be near a body of water and feel the sunshine on her face - her happiest memories are anchored in simple pleasures - like having a picnic in the sun sitting on the steps facing the water at Retiro park (Madrid) (when her sister came to visit her) whilst enjoying watching people in their rowboats
She greatly admires Amy Adams- who is her favorite actress or as she said "love love love her"- for displaying tremendous range while still managing to be natural and simple without having to try too hard. Christina aspires to have the same transparent and honest quality in her acting. Her pet peeve - she hates it when people talk/ don't pay attention when watching movies. For her a film is like a work of art which makes her very "persnickety" when watching a movie!
Once we were at the chosen location I used a off camera flash (SB-700) with a Rogue Flashbender to reflect/diffuse the light (the first time I have attempted this) with Monica holding the unit high up a couple of feet away. I will have to admit that the flash was a struggle (given my first attempt in these settings) and I really cant thank the duo enough for their her patience throughout these pictures - so encouraging and supportive. Christina posed with confidence, despite few onlookers, even bringing in her "acting" skills with variety of expressions. Though I managed a few good shots with the flash (after a lot of over-exposures initially due to a high ISO that I forgot to initially reset) I then switched to non-flash set-up by moving Christina to a area that had some decent light from the restaurant and bumped up the ISO to about 8000 and her facing her face slightly upwards. This was a steep learning curve and though I cant claim a lot of keepers but it was part of a terrific learning experience and Christina herself liked quite a few of the pics. More importantly the young lady was open to the idea of shooting again in more familiarity now and possibly in natural light - am definitely looking forward to that.
Thanks a lot Christina for your time and your trust and immense patience - you were such a wonderful sporting subject and it was a pleasure knowing you and your mom. All the very best in your acting pursuits - as I joked would love for you to be very very famous so I could use your pics as my claim to fame :-)
For the project I am going with a high-ISO grainier pic but adding another pic with the Flash in the comments. Feedback welcome.
