The Mangyan people
One of our most special moments during our holiday was the day we visitied the Mangyan people and village.
The Mangyan's, a generic name for the eight indigenous groups in Mindoro, with a total population of about 100.000 people, were once the only inhabitants of this island.
Before the Spaniards arrived in Mindoro, the people traded with the Chinese extensively.
The Southern tribes are more advanced as seen in their use of weaving, pottery and system of writing. The Northern tribes, on the other hand, are simpler in their way of living.
They are very peacuful people and one of there achievements is a own , special writing system as found in the Hanuno scrupt, a beautiful kind of wisdom and poetry.
Here's an example, in english ofcourse:
If united we remain
and our bond is strong and pure,
you and I, far as we are,
it's like holding hands again,
it's like sitting side by side.
Simple , lovely and elegant, just like the people.
And another statement, we are very proud of the dutch anthropologist, linguist and former missionary priest Antoon Postma , who lived with the Mangyan people and researched and wrote so much about them. He also married a Mangyan lady, called Yam-Ay. We learned so much from him.
So sad that he died on 22 oktober last year, just a few months before our visit, R.I.P mr. Postma.
We wish to thank the Mangyan people for there hospitality during our visit.
Nagpapasalamat kami sa iyo ang lahat.
